Hot Rods and a Big Birthday

Well I have lived to reach 50 and I rolled into the day with the normal activities.  Then I was treated to lunch by one of my daughters –she realized after we arrived at the parking lot that she had forgotten her wallet, that was fine by me I said “lets eat anyway”.  During lunch her boyfriend popped in and dropped off a credit card and insisted that I have dessert.  After all it was my birthday so I managed to shove half of a molten lava cake with ice cream into my face, it was a struggle.  My daughter dropped me off and it was time to start doing what many of these summer weeks require and that is packing up to head out on the road.

This week my husband had a show in Mt.Pleasant, PA, at the Bullskin Township Fairgrounds.  He has been fortunate enough to do this show for the last several years.  By the time we got on the road it was late and I was just a tad salty, after all it was my birthday I thought to myself-I knew my dinner would be at some little truck stop somewhere on the road and it would consist of something pre-packaged at that time of the night, but the truck stop we stopped at had some very perky and upbeat employees for 11:30 pm.  So I ended up with a slice of pizza, a bag of chips and a Cinabon.  Not too long after that I had enough of the road and found a Walmart supercenter off one of the exits to pull into.  We flipped open the bed and I found myself quickly asleep.

Waking up in a Walmart parking lot is something I never dreamed I would be doing, but I do it quite frequently and it isn’t that bad.  Sometimes we have neighbors, fellow rv travelers and semis.  Once we were up we got on our way to Rally in The Valley, a very fun car show put on by the Street Lordz.  We always have fun here and although the weather was rainy they still get a turnout and the show always still goes on.  It was nice seeing our friends and Steve played before The Legendary Hucklebucks, which is a treat.

There were some beautiful cars.  It was interesting to look out at times and see the girls dressed as pinups with their fellows dressed in jeans and white t-shirts, cigarette packs rolled up in their sleeves for a minute or two it is like time travel, everything rolls back to the fifties or before.

I have to say one of the exciting parts of the day is the burnouts.  After the pinup contest, and all the trophies are given out then the burnouts start, I think this year I saw the most spectacular one ever.  What can I say it is just good, clean American fun.  I looked at Steve and said “Should we do some burnouts in the old RV?”  Then we just looked at each other and laughed.

I could say photographer, but I am a collector of minutes in time, visual memories.
